As you can see the costumes were AMAZING!

And the food was good too! The rice balls were a big hit and all the other 'oriental' snacks were very much enjoyed - as was the movie!
With this event so late in the month it won't be long before T.A.G. gears up for the next program, so come back soon to see what T.A.G. is planning for February!

The Ketchikan Public Library's Teen Advisory Group invites all T.A.G. members - past and present to our first ever Alumni Meeting!
Saturday, January 7th at 2:00, in part of our all year celebrations of 5 years of T.A.G., we will kick off 2012 with an open meeting for all T.A.G. folk - alumni included.
We are hoping to see many familiar faces and to hear of their adventures out in the WORLD as well as make some plans for 2012 - including our amazing Studio Ghibli Event later this month!

And it seems that a good time was had by all!
This was the final T.A.G. event for 2011 - we will be kicking off the new year with our first ever Alumni Meeting - Current T.A.G. folk will host Alumni for a special meeting on January 7th.
There will be much more T.A.G. happenings in the new year - we hope you will visit us again in 2012!

This past weekend was the Friends of the Library Book Sale!
And after the sale was the Clean UP!
There were not TONS of books left after the Sale,
but T.A.G. was there to help!

The books were put in boxes to make transporting them easier.

Then they were taken to a recycling bin, all the cardboard boxes were recycled too!

And a triumphant T.A.G. rejoiced at a job well done!

Wow! Ancient Asia night was so much fun!

Austin gave a wonderful presentation on Asia, featuring China, foot binding and Mao, very informative and interesting.

And as you can see the teens created some amazing dessert sushi as well!

We had a whole swamp full of gators.
The movie was magical and the crafters were SO creative!They seemed to have a grand time creating as well.

Costume Ball Fun!

The Teen Summer Program has begun at the Ketchikan Public Library!T.A.G. members got in early and got the basics of the decorations for the Teen Corner done - note the amazing flying saucers!
Once the room was set, the food put out and the rest of the room readied we let folks in to sign up.

Of course that wasn't all that was happening - there was dancing and chatting and food and fun. The first batch of prizes were handed out and hopefully a good time was had by all.

The Instant Gratification booth will be up and running Wednesday June 8th, 15th & 22nd if you didn't make it to the Ball there is still plenty of time to sign up and we will be posting about our next event soon!

This book is about a young misguided girl from New York City recovering from the recent death of her beloved younger brother. She is on the brink of suicide when her father whisks her off to Paris, France. Along the way, she unearths a long forgotten story by reading the journal of a girl growing up during the french revolution--a girl with an interesting tie to the royal family.

This book truly has it all, mystery, romance, history, music and even time-travel! It was amazing! I literally could not put it down, reading into all hours of the night!

Jennifer Donnelly has a true gift for winding an intriguing story that will touch your heart with an adventure in the catacombs of Paris that will send chills up and down your spine!

Quite creatively as you can see!Lots of folks participated in the different costume contests

The judges did an excellent job!

Everyone eagerly awaited the verdict!

T.A.G. is going to return to our Art in the Afternoon craft series in November, look for news about that in a week or two! And T.A.G. is planning our big holiday party in December too!

The End of the Summer Party was a great time!
There were lots of games and prizes!

We got the cart that T.A.G. members 'pimped' for a contest years ago out and the battery still worked, so we had music too.

All in all it was wonderful - though folks got into their prizes sooner than expected!

I would like to thank all the folks who made the Teen Summer Program possible - especially the Friends of the Library and all the T.A.G. members who put lots of time and energy into making this years program great!

School is gearing up soon, and we are bidding goodbye to several members who are heading off to College - we will miss them, but wish them well. Once T.A.G. has a chance to take a deep breath and figure out what they want to do next we will be back!

Relay for Life - Team Kraken

This is T.A.G.'s Team Kraken (at about 11:00 p.m. Friday)
They walked (as a relay team) for the full 18 hours of the Relay for Life and raised over $500.00 for the American Cancer Society!!
Anyone who thinks negatively about teens should think again, because these folks are AMAZING!
T.A.G. will be getting back to the Teen Summer Program as soon as they catch up on a bit of sleep so come back soon for more T.A.G. news!

First I would like to thank Godzilla for yet another amazing poetry workshop!
It was an excellent evening of creativity.

Next T.A.G. will be participating in Ketchikan's first ever Relay for Life. This is a American Cancer Society fundraiser and awareness raiser and T.A.G. members will be 'Relay-ing' starting Friday at 6 p.m. and going on through Saturday at Noon! We will also be hosting a booth and selling goodies to raise more money for this great cause!
After an 18 hour event like the Relay we will be taking a bit of a break, but the Teen Summer Program is still happening, so come back soon for more news and T.A.G. events!

T.A.G. spent some time at a recent meeting creating collages for a banquet that will be held at the Alaska State Library conference in Anchorage next week.
They had a lot of fun creating the centerpieces and hope that the folks at the banquet will enjoy their art! Of course T.A.G. also spent some meeting time talking about other upcoming events and will share more news soon.

A Blog; "My Life as a TAG Member"

There is a certain extent to which you could say I was born into TAG. Growing up with my mother working at the library, the Ketchikan Public Library was more than a second home to me, it was a sanctuary. I felt natural there, and the tombs held in by the stacks were my brethren more than my local library's collection. The awkward part might be that I never took up pleasure reading very much beyond the occasional good book, and I admit I'm rather picky when it comes to literature.

However, it still seemed only natural when my own mother started up the TAG group that I would join. As any reader of this blog knows, TAG is a Teen Advisory Group at Ketchikan Public Library. It's administrative person is Kelly Johnson, who also does this very blog as well as managing the Teen Corner on the library's website, doing all of the "paperwork" so to speak for the programming, and overall hauls ass on making TAG thrive in an environment that quite honestly was hostile towards it. With Kelly being my mother, I knew more about the background happenings of TAG than most members, but I tried not to let that interfere with my involvement too much.

Yet again, it did seem almost too obvious that I would join TAG--it was an easy resume builder that my mother happened to be in charge of. But I admit, when I first agreed to join TAG, I wasn't enthused by the concept behind it. I was skeptical, as most teens are, that TAG would really be fun and/or fulfilling. I may have in fact joined TAG so as to not disappoint my mother, but I dedicated over a hundred hours of my life to TAG because I found I believed in it. Every program we brought together, no matter how well (or poorly) attended, the members of TAG would make an effort to make it worth it.

In my two years being in TAG there was only one program that I felt could have actually been improved by the people improving, and that program was on a hot summer night with two longer movies, so I feel it may as well be excused from it's folly.

I can remember sitting talking to college students, being one of four non-college students in attendance, laughing and enjoying the program, just as well as I can remember the silent rave where dancing, singing and hilarious games were constant and well attended. Truly TAG had--has--a certain magic to it, one I hope that, although it will certainly change as the dynamics of the TAG members change, never dies.

This Art in the Afternoon is open to all ages starting at 2:00 on Saturday, October 10th!

This week (September 26-October 3) is Banned Books Week an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. If you think book banning is a thing of the past, that people don't do that anymore - check out this link

Human Knots at the TSP Party

The Party was really great - Everyone seemed to have a good time and there was something for everyone! From Swimming passes to bubble wands to books to book bags and more, everyone went home with a prize. The big prizes were drawn for and the comment card winners were announced as well. The FINAL part of the Teen Summer Program is happening Saturday Night!!
It's the Teen Summer Program Party - all the prize winners will be announced for all the Comment Card prizes, the drawings for all the punch card prizes will happen - including the Grand Prize, there will be a ton of door prizes open to ANY teen who comes to the party, there will be live music by Muskank and TONS OF FOOD!!
T.A.G. hopes that folks who participated as well as any other Ketchikan teen who would like to have a great time will come be a part of this End of Summer event!

Improv Night was so much FUN! Huge Thanks to Clare Bennett for sharing her talents with us and our guests!

And it was such a big hit that T.A.G. may host another Improv Event this fall!

Beading Works!

The Beading Workshop was an amazing success! Not only was beautiful jewelry created, but we had a great time too!

Crab necklace was a favorite!

Isn't this necklace gorgeous! Such talented teens!

Earrings were another big hit - look at the button earrings! Wow!

And I love this beautiful blue creation!
A few folks had to leave early, but I am happy to say we have enough supplies to do a Bead Work Art in the Afternoon - so look for that this fall.

We are taking the weekend off - but look for what is happening next week!
