New DVDs

At the last T.A.G. meeting I announced that 6 new DVDs will be purchased for the library that were recommended by T.A.G. Once again T.A.G. is helping select materials for the library!

Recommending materials for purchase is an important part of why T.A.G. was formed. To get input from teens who use the library to make the library better for all teens. It is one of those amazing win win situations.

T.A.G.s first batch of recommendations were music CDs, T.A.G. will be working on book recommendations next. Our first book choice was "My Secret" a compilation of PostSecret cards from Frank Warren's web site. It was so great to show off this book at T.A.G.'s first Create Art in the Afternoon program with the "This item was chosen for the Ketchikan Public Library by the Teen Advisory Group" sticker in the front.

So, look closely, maybe you can spot those T.A.G. selected items next time you are in the library!

A Visitor

TAG had a visitor at our meeting today. Samantha, a Vista Volunteer, came in and spoke about the Youth to Work program at the Ketchikan Job Center. This program is sponsored by the Ketchikan Youth Initiative (KYI), the same group who did the KYI Expo last month.

This program includes a two week set of classes that gives teens interview and job finding skills and can even work out an internship that will help a teen find a job in the field they are interested in working. Many teens are then hired by the internship provider, or the Job Center helps them find another job in their field of interest.

If you are an interested teen contact Samantha at the Job Center, the program begins Tuesday, January 29th at 3 p.m. - arrive early or call Monday if you have questions.

End of a Semester

Most of the TAG is wrapping up the semester with finals today. Though I hear a few are over on Prince of Wales doing Academic Decathlon work. I hope it all goes well for everyone.

With Teen Tech Week falling the same time as our big software upgrade for the library system we aren't sure what we can really manage for programming. However, we have a few good ideas for later in the year that should be really fun.

If YOU have a great idea for a program in 2008, please share! We are always willing to consider good programing ideas.

Have a great weekend!

Art was Created in the Afternoon!

TAG's first program to include folks other than teens was a great success with 22 people creating art Saturday afternoon. Evidently teens aren't the only ones who enjoy creating art as we were joined by lots of Big & Little Sisters, mom's and kids and of course quite a few teens. Everyone seemed to enjoy the chance to cut, paste and create some amazing art!

We floated the idea of sock puppets for our next Art in the Afternoon to the folks gathered and it was greeted with quite a bit of enthusiasm. We are really hoping to see everyone (and more!) in March for that program.

In the meantime TAG members will be meeting at the end of the month to share reviews, brainstorm more programing ideas and start picking books to recommend for purchasing this winter.

I think a bit of a break after all the things that TAG has been involved in is not a bad idea. I have a feeling we'll be busy again really soon!

Ready for the Weekend

We had a great meeting Tuesday night, a good amount of members and lots of interesting reviews. It was great to see the folks who had been traveling over the holidays. I truly appreciate everyone who showed up in spite of icky weather.

I'm gathering materials for TAG's first "Create Art in the Afternoon" program. We are hoping to get lots of folks of all ages. The "art cards" should be wonderful and we will be showing off TAG's first recommended book purchase; My Secret, a PostSecret book compiled by Frank Warren.

"Create Art in the Afternoon" will be Saturday (the 12th of January) from 1-3 p.m. - just drop in whenever you can make it and create some art!

Meeting Tonight

The first TAG meeting of 2008 will be tonight at 6:30. We are hoping to have a visit from Samantha who helps with the Youth to Work program here in Ketchikan. Other items on our agenda are advertising for our program on Saturday, a new web page for written reviews and requesting materials in 2008.

I am hoping for a good turn out in spite of our confused weather, but want everyone to be safe too! Maybe things will calm down a bit by this evening.
